The history of the Ackroyd Community Centre
The history of the Ackroyd Community Centre
The history of the Ackroyd Community Centre established in 1977, the Ackroyd Community Association manages the Ackroyd Community Centre, which is based in the Borough of Lewisham and leased from the local authority.
The Association owes its existence to those local people who organised a public meeting in 1977 to determine whether there was general support for the idea of converting a disused church building into a community centre. A well-attended meeting gave a clear indication of both need and support. A steering group was set up and went on to develop the Centre, with considerable help from the local authority.
Located just off Brockley Rise, the Centre enjoys long standing support from the local community as well as the London Borough of Lewisham. The Association aims through the Centre to provide facilities for social inclusion, leisure and education, and actively promotes equality opportunity.
